Meet Shontay Lundy, the founder of Black Girl Suncreen

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for reading our twelfth blog post. We are honored to have Shontay Lundy, the CEO, Creator, and Founder of Black Girl Sunscreen, featured on our blog! In 2016, when Shontay became tired of using sunscreen that left a white residue, she decided to leverage her MBA and knack for business to develop a melanin-friendly option for women who look like her. Since its founding, Black Girl Sunscreen has progressed from simply hitting the shelves of Target and Ulta to global expansion.

Historically, sunscreen has been created for and advertised to people with lighter and fairer skin tones. As a result, people of color have been erased from sun education dialogue. Because of the lack of sun safety dialogue and sunscreen for people with deeper complexions, the black community has not been adequately equipped or informed to battle sun damage. Shontay’s Black Girl Sunscreen was founded to change that.

Unlike other sunscreen brands, Black Girl Sunscreen caters exclusively to women of color. With melanated skin kept in mind, Black Girl Sunscreen dries clear and protects melanin without the white-cast.

Through her work, Shontay is committed to educating women of color all around the world on the importance of wearing sunscreen. In addition, she is passionate about having her company invest in young women who are doing phenomenal things and are pursuing their collegiate careers. As a sponsor of USC’s Women’s Track and FAMU’s Women’s Softball and Track and Field teams, Black Girl Sunscreen is actively involved in supporting young women who are focused on their athletic or collegiate aspirations. To Shontay, it’s important for these ladies to see a successful, black and female owned and founded company back them as they pursue their dreams.

Shontay knows the challenges women of color face when it comes to having a seat at the table. When Shontay first started building her sunscreen empire, people and brands tried to put Shontay and Black Girl Sunscreen in a box, telling her what she could and could not do. However, Shontay didn’t let the negativity or limited mindsets of others get in the way of accomplishing her goals and following her intuition when it came to doing what was best for her company. In the end, her sunscreen products, her company’s mission, and her tireless work ethic spoke volumes for her as she quickly became a voice of authority in the sun care space.

Shontay does not credit Black Girl Sunscreen’s success all to herself. She is aware of the black, female heroes who came before her to shatter glass ceilings. Shontay understands the responsibility she has to continue to honor these black founders and brands. She does this by trailblazing uncharted waters for future female generations in the space of sun care and corporate accomplishments.
